What kind of Vehicle to Drive

In aspiring to have a zero carbon footprint my big ticket dilemma at the moment is my vehicle, I did have a Mini Cooper for 4 years but it was extremely difficult to get out of the back seat, almost impossible for most of us, and that is the worst thing I can say about that car, I loved that car. I felt quite good about the amount of gas I burned, plus whenever you saw another Mini Driver there was usually a little tip of the hat of some sort. Such Fun.
I then found a good buy on a Ford Explorer, which has been a great car too, but hard on gas. Not as bad as you might think but non the less, not good. As we live in the wilds of the Cowichan Valley it is necessary at times to go off road so some kind of wheel drive is a necessity sometimes. People of all ages can get in and out comfortably and they hold lots of people and Real Estate signs. We tend to have a lot of parapanilia.
I have my eye on a Hybrid Toyoto Highlander. I just have to save up.  Then you have to stop and wonder what is a lesser evil. This Ford is not going to go to the dump any time soon with any luck, which means that someone will be driving it and that someone might as well be me.  In that way I am not forcing the purchase of a new car which deplets  the planets natural resources further.
I am hoping that they have an even more efficient vehicle by the time I am able to get one. They are learning in great strides but I don't understand why we cannot buy anelectric car for a decent price, or at least I don't want to buy into the theory that says it is only about money.  The oil companies have bribed the car companies into not producing a great electric or hydrogen car yet.  If that is what it is ,surely we can demand to only buy what is good for our planet.
'THE SUPREME REALITY OF OUR TIME IS THE VULNERABILITY OF OUR PLANET'
-John F. Kennedy
I am not sure when he said this but it had to be over 46 years ago .We are just having trouble organizing .Thank goodness that we are all thinking about it now. I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.
