The pound sank Monday to sit at 30-year lows while most stock markets tumbled following Britain's decision to leave the European Union, with traders fearing it will lead to months of uncertainty. Sterling plunged two percent in early exchanges as dealers rushed into assets considered safe, such as the yen and gold, although Japan's Nikkei stock index rallied after suffering a battering on Friday. "People are finding it difficult to comprehend what Brexit implies for the future -- we don't know yet what the magnitude of the shock will be," Steven Barrow, head of Group-of-10 strategy at Standard Bank Group in London, told Bloomberg News.
At least 10 people were injured at a rally outside the California state capitol in Sacramento on Sunday as members of a white supremacist group clashed with counter-protesters, authorities said. One of its leaders, Matt Parrott, said the party had called the demonstration in part to protest against violence that has broken out outside recent rallies by Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. When the white supremacists arrived at the capitol building at about noon on Sunday, "counter-protesters immediately ran in - hundreds of people - and they engaged in a fight," said George Granada, a spokesman for the Capitol Protection Service division of the California Highway Patrol.
Mitchell Marsh emerged as the unlikely bowling hero for Australia as the World Cup-holders defeated the West Indies by 58 runs in the final of the Tri-Nation One-Day International Series. Set a challenging target of 271 after wicketkeeper Matthew Wade's unbeaten 57 led an Australian lower-order revival from 173 for six to a final total of 270 for nine off 50 overs, Marsh claimed the prized wickets of Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels, adding the scalp of opening batsman Johnson Charles for good measure to effectively short-circuit the home side's pursuit. Josh Hazlewood polished off the tail to finish with the best figures of five for 50, but it was Marsh's spell that made the difference when it mattered most.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The first event of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials produced a stunner: Ryan Lochte failed to qualify for the team Sunday night in an event he won at the 2012 London Games.
Vocal queen Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder and Tori Kelly kept the theme of the BET Awards — paying tribute to Prince — alive with adoring, passionate performances on Sunday.
